5 Lessons From A Loser: Al Bundy

Lesson 2: Stop Living In The Past
Al once scored four touchdowns in a single game in the city championship for Polk High School, and he never wasted an opportunity to tell someone about it. It’s cool if you were a warrior on the gridiron, but if you still bring up that heart-breaking loss in the state regionals when you’re at dinner parties, you need to move on. Nobody wants to hear a guy prattle on about his glory days — especially women. They want to believe that your glory days are ahead of you.

Dr. William July, author of four books on relationships, including “Understanding the Tin Man: Why So Many Men Avoid Intimacy,”  had this to add:

“Trying to live in the past will destroy the present,” he said. “Being focused on the guy you used to be with the washboard abs or the cool convertible only distracts from what’s going on now. The guy you were should be a picture on the wall and a bunch of great memories. However, that’s not who your girlfriend or wife is with today.”
