6 Things To Do Before Changing Jobs

career advice for guys changing jobs

#4. CHECK IN ON YOUR 401K, IRA, et al.
When you’re about to switch jobs, you’ve got to make a decision about what to do with your 401K. Does it your new employer offer one? If so, you can either keep it in your current employer’s account (although you’ll be unable to contribute any further) for penalty-free withdrawals, or roll it over.

Each option comes with its own set of advantages and disadvantages, including maintenance fees, which can be avoided by not purchasing company stock or putting away a larger amount of your paycheck each month. These things can get tricky, so your best bet is to speak with an accountant or someone at your bank and ask them for advice before making any major changes.

#5. SECURE YOUR NETWORKING CONTACTS
Instead of just blasting out a group email with empty “thank yous,” individually ask the people you want to stay in touch with out for coffee or a drink before you exit. It’s a small gesture that could come in handy down the line if you need to call on those people for anything — like a job. Let them know you want to keep in touch and ask them to keep you in mind down the road. (Of course, you’ll do the same.) You never know when that person is going to change jobs or where they’ll end up, so leaving a positive lasting impression can help.

If possible, participate in every activity hosted by your current employer and socialize with other participants. This task can be very challenging, especially if you’re an introvert, but if you want to meet people who can help you land a job in the future, you should be willing to take that risk. Besides, participating in activities is also a great way to make new friends!
