Mario was initially conceived of as a carpenter. The “Jump Man” of Donkey Kong was a carpenter until a coworker of Shigeru Miyamoto remarked that Mario’s overalls implied that he was a plumber. Mario’s occasional use of hammers is a callback to this previous profession.
