“Once alcohol is in your bloodstream, the liver is affected first, followed by the brain,” explains Dr. Urschel. When alcohol reaches the brain, a number of side effects occur. “Alcohol starts to sedate the part of our brain that controls our judgment and decision making to sleep,” Dr. Urschel continues. “So, when this part of the brain — called the cortex — is asleep, people are more prone to risky behaviors because they are not thinking clearly.”
