It is a revolutionary new type of workout that is based on short bursts of activity alternated with brief rest periods. The typical interval training workout is only about 20 minutes long, so it’s great for guys who are too busy to spend hours in the gym.

For interval training, you don’t even need a gym. You can do any type of exercise you prefer — run, bike or even do exercises in front of your bathroom mirror. All that matters is that you do exercises that also allow you to exert maximum intensity safely for 20 to 30 seconds at a time.

Here is a typical interval training workout:

-2 minutes of warmup and stretching

-20 to 30 seconds of full-intensity activity — give it all you’ve got!

-1 minute recovery (walk or jog slowly)

-Repeat this full-intensity followed by recovery 8 times

-2 minutes of cool down and stretching

As you can see, the whole interval training workout will take less than 20 minutes out of your day. However, it will feel like a workout: Those 20 to 30 second bursts will really zap you, but they’ll be over before you know it.

Interval training has been found to be superior to traditional long, slow cardio workouts like jogging on the treadmill. Oh, and more good news — you only have to interval train 3 times a week to see results. Note: Before starting this routine, check with your doctor to make sure you’re healthy enough for the intensity. Also, make sure you warm up and stretch properly before each workout. Give it a try. You’ll soon see why interval training is one of the best toning workouts for men!
