Stay in and hire someone else to cook. Apps like Look&Cook, which features one of Israel’s best-known celebrity chefs, Meir Adoni, or Tavola, created by Corso 32’s owner and head chef, Daniel Costa, can walk you through a simple, step-by-step preparation of a delicious gourmet meal. For added enjoyment, consider renting the assistance of a local chef for a few hours; one who can show guests how to prepare foods, as well as whip up something tasty on their own. There’s also the “AirBnB of Food,” which is similar to the widely-used house-sharing website, AirBnB; Eatwith, Feastly and Cookapp all connect dedicated chefs with passionate foodies.
#4. Throw a Beach Party or Hawaiian Luau
Screw the sand! Grab some hula skirts, grass-skirted dressings for the tabletops, and flowered necklaces for attendants to wear. Boom! You have a Hawaiian-themed party. Download a ukulele playlist and you’re set. Does the milestone birthday fall in the dead of winter? Rent an insulated party tent and and change it to a beach theme. (In that case, don’t screw the sand; buy some sand.) Decorate as you see fit or your budget allows.

The initial surprise isn’t the only surprise. This type of surprise party keeps on giving throughout the night. Keep the surprises coming throughout the night. Surprise guests, location changes, uniquely-timed presents. You get the idea … If you have the creative bandwidth, you can plan a surprise for every year they’ve been born. Otherwise, a handful will do.
