By now you’re starting to feel a combo of sleepy, dizzy, and happy. “The antiseptic qualities of alcohol make you sleepy,” says Dr. Urschel. “This is why people get droopy eyes and pass out after excessive drinking. At this point, the alcohol has traveled to the limbic system — your brain’s pleasure center — and triggered the release of dopamine, which causes the high, or buzz, you feel from drinking. The cerebellum, which controls motor skills, is also negatively affected, which is why drunk people tend to sway or have trouble standing up.”
