How To Speed Up Your Metabolism

#4. EAT MORE OFTEN

It sounds counterintuitive, but eating more meals throughout the day will raise your metabolism by fooling your body into thinking it doesn’t need to go into high-efficiency, slow-burn mode. Bernardi suggests eating every two hours. Just be sure to watch your portions and make each meal low-carb and protein-centric.

#5. UP YOUR FIBER INTAKE

Kristine Clark, PhD, and director of sports nutrition at Penn State, recommends fiber to jack up metabolism. It’s the stuff that your body doesn’t digest, but works hard to break down anyway, using up energy. Plus, most high-fiber food is high in nutrition and low in calories. Think corn, beans, brown rice, oatmeal, broccoli, apples, and soybeans.

#6. FEAST ON FISH

Fish, being a low-fat, high-protein food, works well to help build muscle. Protein also takes more energy to digest than carbohydrates. Plus EPA and DHA, the omega-3 fatty acids found only in fish oil, may have the power to boost your metabolism, researchers from the University of Western Ontario report. Fish oil increases levels of fat-burning enzymes and decreases levels of fat-storage enzymes in your body. Choose capsules containing at least 300 milligrams of EPA and DHA total. Please don’t chew them.
