5 Lesser-Known Ways Mother Nature Gets You High

The psychoactive Colorado River toad is found in northern Mexico and the Southwestern United States, with venom that contains 5-MeO-DMT and bufotenin, both tryptamines found in psychedelic drugs. Venom is extracted from the toad by squeezing its glands, then smoked to produce a high/body buzz a little like magic mushrooms. People smoking toad venom report that they see objects distorted, vibrant colors, and “altered perceptions.” The high peaks after about 15 minutes with minor effects lasting for about two hours. None of the states where the California River toad is indigenous — California, Arizona, New Mexico — allow the toads to be removed from the state, and consuming the venom is illegal everywhere thanks to the bufotenin, which the DEA classifies as a Schedule I controlled substance.
