Flying With CBD Oil: Everything You Need to Know

Flying With CBD Oil Everything You Need to Know

With each day that passes, states around the country are changing their stance on marijuana. Everywhere you turn there are new ways CBD is being utilized in coffees, food, businesses, and health food, even in states where marijuana is still illegal.

The laws and regulations surrounding CBD oil and marijuana differ from state to state. When flying with CBD oil, it’s important to familiarize yourself with which products are and are not accepted when going through airport security.

What Prompted the Change?

There are many details to consider when planning and packing for a trip. Until recently, flying with CBD oil was illegal. Even though it’s been accepted by numerous states, it’s not an approved substance with TSA. When traveling, TSA agents don’t check for illegal substances, but if a product is found to contain marijuana or be infused with cannabis, they must alert authorities.

As of June 2018, the Food and Drug Administration approved a drug called Epidiolex, which helps treat seizures in children with epilepsy. This promoted TSA to review and revise the policy they have surrounding passengers to travel with CBD oil.

Restrictions

Just because the TSA updated the policies surrounding its stance on CBD oil doesn’t mean all products are accepted. The lines are still a bit hazy around what types of products you can travel with versus what is banned.

If TSA tests your CBD product and it reveals levels of THC, that is grounds for arrest, which is why it’s important to understand what you can and cannot travel with. Although the majority of products that contain cannabis and marijuana are still banned, certain prescriptions and medications are now allowed in your carry on bag.

Precautions to Take

While the line is very fine, TSA will not hesitate to confiscate products and notify authorities if they are suspicious a substance contains THC. If you have questions that the product you’re packing might not be accepted, your best bet is to leave it at home.

Each state has different laws surrounding CBD and medical marijuana so you must comply even when traveling. If you have given a prescription for CBD, you must travel with a note from your doctor. You will also want to keep your oil in the original packaging.

Still Have Questions?

Under the TSA “What Can I Bring” webpage, passengers can ask questions about what is and isn’t accepted on an airplane. No topic is off-limits, so many travelers have asked about the new rules and regulations surrounding CBD oil. The answers to travelers’ questions come from TSA agents themselves, ensuring there is no question about the validity of an item.

Educate Yourself on Flying with CBD Oil

Because of the unclear lines and restrictions on flying with CBD oil, you’ll want to educate yourself on the dos and don’ts before traveling. While TSA had updated the policies surrounding CBD oil, not all products are accepted.

Knowing what can and cannot be taken on a plane will ensure that your packing goes much smoother.
