Vietnam was also the source of 1972’s October surprise, as Secretary of State Henry Kissinger told reporters in an Oct. 26 press conference that “peace is at hand.” President Nixon was re-elected in a landslide over George McGovern (Nixon scored 520 Electoral votes; McGovern had only 17).
