The movie is famous for starring Ronald Reagan, but he didn’t play Rockne. He played George Gipp, Notre Dame’s first All-American, and the subject of Rockne’s famous “Win one for the Gipper” speech. Rockne was one of the most inspirational and innovative coaches of all time, yet his greatest accomplishment may have been managing to make Notre Dame and its fans seem neither obnoxious nor annoying.
