Time travel dates back to early Hinduism, Buddhism, and Islam religions. Actually, probably further back than that if it actually works. And no one loves time travel more than the movies. Or time travelers who changed their futures (or pasts) and struck it rich and got laid way more than they did in their original timelines.

Point is, since seeing X-Men: Days of Future Past we got to thinking about time travel theories in movies. And even though some of those movies may not have been based on true stories — although we’re pretty sure Superman is a biopic — plenty of time travel movies based the time travel aspect of their films on real theories. Here are four of the best we could find … plus Star Trek: Generations because it had an interesting take on time travel despite being a terrible, terrible film.
#1. Superman (1978)
In order to save Lois Lane from a car accident, Superman flies around the Earth in opposition to its rotation and sends the world back in time so that he can prevent certain events from occurring.
What it says about time travel
That time is mechanical, and that we can fast forward and rewind it like a VHS tape.
Real life time travel theory in play: The Infinite Cylinder
Astronomer Frank Tipler proposed a mechanism where matter that is 10 times the mass of the sun would be rolled into a long, dense cylinder. Like a space joint. In theory, after spinning the cylinder at a rate of several billion revolutions per minute, a spaceship could link up with the rotation and establish a closed, time-like curve that could be manipulated externally.
