The first Halloween was filmed in Pasadena, California and was originally titled The Babysitter Murders. The script, written by John Carpenter and Debra Hill, was completed in 10 days. Carpenter wrote the ultra-memorable score in three days and was inspired by a simple bongo exercise he learned as a kid. He found inspiration for Halloween in Hitchcock’s Psycho; Dr. Loomis refers to Sam Loomis (John Gavin).
