The biggest lingering question (next to, what the hell is Brad Pitt’s right eye looking at) is “did the mission succeed or fail?” We see Bruce Willis shot and killed as the virus-spreading scientist boards his flight. (As though a plane would take off, business as usual, if a guy was shot to death in the terminal minutes before.)
However, he ends up seated next to one of the scientists from the future who sent back Willis in the first place. The implication is pretty strong that this scientist thwarts the virus-carrier and stops the plague, and that Willis was merely a pawn to identify who the carrier was.
