Okay, there are a lot of ways to go with this one; various interpretations involve telekinesis and time travel. But the simplest explanation is this: When the jet engine crashes into Donnie’s house at the start, it created a fragile “tangent universe” that will only exist for 28 days (the number of days “Frank the Bunny” says Donnie has until “the end of the world”).
At the end of the tangent’s cycle, Donnie sees the plane (which he now knows carries his mom and sister and their commitment to Sparkle Motion) and decides that he’s going to stay in bed and let the engine fall on him rather than allow the events of the tangent universe to take place (thereby saving the lives of “future girlfriend” Gretchen and the real Frank). Got it?
